Semesters

Semesters 1, 2 & 3

In the first semester, students gain a broad picture of applied health services research through course work in the Canadian Healthcare System; Ethical Foundations of Applied Health Research; and an introductory course on Research and Evaluation. The second semester focuses on health care research through course work in the Detirminants of Health; Policy and Decision Making; and Qualitative and Quantitative research methods. In the third semester, students undertake a four-month residency placement with a key decision-maker. The residency allows the student to develop an understanding of how knowledge is transferred between the academic community and decision-makers; to gain hands-on research and decision-making experience; and to discover whether there is a research topic of mutual interest to the student and the host organization.

(Summer) Residency

 Semesters 4, 5 & 6

In the fourth semester, students are to focus on learning more about dissemination by incorporating their experiences during the residency placement with theory about knowledge transfer and research uptake. As well, students will continue to acquire research skills by specializing in either Qualitative or Quantitative methods. This course will have as its main requirement the preparation of a thesis research proposal. In the fifth and sixth semesters, students are to continue writing a thesis culminating in an academic defense. Students are also required to make a public presentation of their thesis research targeted to decision-makers
